Watertown Artist John Dosch has incorporated many natural elements like gravel, thistle, twigs, twine, bark with wire and brass on handmade paper into various works like “Croatian Landscape,” and “ Lakeside .” His works are now on display at the Community Cultural Center in Brookings until June 26.

Artist Uses Inspiration from

Nature as Fuel for ‘Artist Tank’

When Watertown artist John Dosh takes a walk along a gravel road or drives by the countryside, he’s actually, filling his “artist tank.”

“My artwork is inspired by nature,” he said. “I’m not necessarily looking for beauty, but I take in what is there and it usually comes out in my work.”

Dosh’s work is currently on display at the Community Cultural Center , 524 4th St. , in Brookings, until June 26. An artist reception is set for June 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

His rural upbringing helped him form a strong relationship with the landscapes of South Dakota . Originally from Aberdeen , SD , he discovered his love of art in his early teens. In 1979, he completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fine Art from Northern State College .

Dosh also spent 12 years in Webster , SD. In August of 2007, he retired from the military after 33 years of service and started New Moon Studio in Watertown , SD.

The 30 works represented in this exhibition are pieces started in June 2007 and as current as 2009. Within his art are many natural elements found in the earth that helps bring his pieces to “life.”

Some of these elements include gravel, sand, twine, sisal, thistle seed, twigs, bark, copper, aluminum wire, seeds and pieces of glass.

“I like the connection I feel with nature as I work with its elements,” he said.

He said he also uses metal for it’s effulgence as it uses light to liven the art piece. “It also represents the sun’s resplendence,” said Dosch. “The seeds represent life, growth and propagation.

“My works reflect the inner thoughts and subconscious ideas which are exposed in the creative process of making art,” he said.

Dosh usually works spontaneously on a piece, not knowing exactly what the outcome will be. “I know when I’m finished with it when I see a sense of balance in composition, and color and when I sense I have connected with the place or thought that came to mind as I worked.”

His works are made with heavy hand-made paper or canvas panel for a base to hold the mixed media. Dosh also uses colored polishes, various waxes and acrylic paints to get the desired finish.

Dosh’s work can be seen on http://johndosch.blogspot.com/. For more information on this exhibit, contact the Brookings Arts Council at (605) 692-4177.
